Crosshair Placement in Valorant, the Habit That Fixes Your Aim

Most aim problems are placement problems. How to hold head level, pre-aim angles, and stop paying the flick tax on every duel you take.

There is a reason a Radiant player's aim looks calm and yours looks frantic. It is usually not sensitivity, and it is usually not reaction time.

It is where the crosshair was sitting before the duel started.

The flick tax

Every duel has a fixed cost you pay before you can shoot: the distance your crosshair has to travel to reach the enemy's head.

If your crosshair is already at head level on the angle they appear from, that distance is close to zero. You click. If it is on the floor, or at chest height, or on the wrong side of the corner, you have to cover that gap first, under pressure, while they are already shooting.

That gap is the flick tax. Good players do not pay it. They are not flicking faster than you, they arranged not to need the flick.

Three rules that do most of the work

1. Head level, always

Your crosshair should sit at the height an enemy head will occupy, not where the floor is and not where you happen to be looking.

The habit that breaks this is looking at the environment while you walk. Your crosshair follows your gaze down stairs, across the floor, over boxes. Then a player appears and you are aiming at their shins.

Fix: pick a head-height reference on the wall ahead of you and keep the crosshair pinned to it as you move. It feels unnatural for roughly a week, then it is automatic and you stop thinking about it forever.

2. Pre-aim the angle, not the middle

When you approach a corner, your crosshair should be on the exact pixel the enemy's head will occupy when they peek, hugged tight to the corner.

Aiming at the middle of the open space is the most common version of this error. It feels safer because it covers more area. It is not safer, it just guarantees you are wrong by a small amount in every direction rather than right in the one direction that matters.

3. Clear angles in sequence, not simultaneously

You cannot cover two angles at once. Trying to means your crosshair sits between them, which is the same as covering neither.

Pick the order deliberately: closest first, then the one that can trade, then the far one. Move the crosshair fully to each in turn.

The drill that actually transfers

Aim trainers build a real skill, but it is a different skill from the one this article is about. Tracking a bot in an open void does not teach you where to hold a crosshair on Ascent B main.

Do this instead:

  1. Load the map you play most in a custom game, no bots.
  2. Walk your three most common routes at normal pace.
  3. At every angle, stop and check: is my crosshair at head level, and is it hugging the corner?
  4. Correct it, keep walking.

Ten minutes per map. The point is not mechanical repetition, it is building a map-specific memory of where head level actually is on the geometry you play.

Sensitivity, briefly

Since it always comes up: there is no correct sensitivity, but there is a correct range. If you cannot do a 180 without lifting the mouse, you are too low. If you overshoot heads on small corrections, you are too high.

Pick something inside that range and then leave it alone. Changing sensitivity every week guarantees you never build muscle memory at any of them, which is a far larger cost than being 10% away from your theoretical optimum.

Why this is the first thing we look at

In a VOD review this is usually the first correctable thing on screen, because it is visible in the first thirty seconds and it compounds into everything else. A player holding proper head level enters every duel with an advantage they did not have to earn in the moment.

It is also the clearest example of the general principle: most of what looks like mechanical skill in Valorant is preparation that happened before the mechanical moment arrived.

Fix the placement and the aim looks like it improved. It did not. You just stopped paying the tax.
